It’s a bit of a wonder how a hobby farmer from Kansas met and married the farm boy from Oregon.. but that’s where we start our story.
We both fondly share memories of helping our parents raise goats, chickens, cows, and countless other critters. Although hundreds of miles apart, our childhoods have a lot of similarities. It’s no wonder that we both share enthusiasm and passion for raising the livestock that we do. Together we raise our children on his multi-generational family farm. It brings us great joy to see our children enjoying the same experiences we did so many years ago.
We have done a little bit of everything on this farm. With rolling hills of wheat, spacious orchards, and of course - all kinds of livestock running around, we keep ourselves pretty busy. Zechariah and I, have enjoyed mixing animal husbandry with our passion for growing nutritious crops on our organic family farm. In fact, thats how we began raising Karakachan livestock guardians.
With our goats close-by we didn’t struggle often with predators. Although there were plenty of them around! We have cougars, bears, coyotes, hawks, and just about everything else imaginable. When we began raising completely, truly free range chickens in our orchard, it was a beautiful sight to behold. Chickens happily grazing and eating up fruit that had dropped from the trees. However, it wasn’t long before the predators found our birds. We lost countless chickens that first year. It was devastating to say the least. In a last attempt, we brought home our first Karakachans. It wasn’t all rainbows. We had to invest time and work into training them properly. Boy did we learn a lot! We also fell in love with them along the way. Thanks to our Karakachans, our chickens can graze in peace. With up to 6000 chickens free ranging on the farm in a year, our dogs are a vital part of what we do.
Now that we are fully comfortable letting our stock graze, we have increased our goat herds. We are super excited to be offering kids from some proven milking does. Some of which have earned their milk stars! This is one more step towards our goal of connecting other farmers with quality animals for their farms.
Wether it’s raising sound livestock guardians that will go on to help protect other farmers stock, or raising goats that are gentle enough for children to handle, everything we do with great conviction and passion. We know that we are laying the foundation pieces for fellow farmers and we are honored to be a part of it. We love helping other farmers find the right fit for their farm.
